Nurses migration and registration

Ahpra registration assistance for nurses

Registration is what allows you to practise as a nurse in Australia. We help you understand your pathway and prepare an application the Nursing and Midwifery Board of Australia can assess.

In Australia, nurses and midwives are registered by the Nursing and Midwifery Board of Australia (NMBA), working with Ahpra (the Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency). Registration is different from a visa and different from a skills assessment for migration.

Internationally qualified nurses start with the NMBA's free online Self-check, which places a qualification into a stream. Depending on the result, a nurse may apply for registration directly, or be referred to the outcomes-based assessment, which for registered nurses includes a computer-based exam (the NCLEX-RN) and an OSCE in Australia. Every applicant also has to meet the Board's registration standards, including English language skills.

What our assistance includes

  • Going through the NMBA Self-check with you and explaining the result
  • A document checklist for the registration application
  • Guidance on certified copies, verification and how documents are sent
  • Planning for the English language skills standard
  • Explaining the outcomes-based assessment stages if you are referred to them

Eligibility and prerequisites

  • A nursing qualification and current registration in your home country
  • Meeting the NMBA's English language skills registration standard
  • Meeting the other NMBA registration standards (criminal history, professional indemnity, recency of practice)

Documents to prepare

  • Nursing qualification certificates and academic transcripts
  • Registration certificates and verification from your nursing councils
  • Employment and experience records
  • English test results
  • Passport and identity documents

This is a starting list. We confirm the exact documents for your situation.

Step by step

  1. Self-check

The NMBA's online Self-check places your qualification in a stream.

  2. Prepare documents

We help you collect and organise the evidence for your application.

  3. Apply to Ahpra

You submit the application; Ahpra and the NMBA assess it.

  4. Assessment if referred

If you are referred to the outcomes-based assessment, you sit the exam and then the OSCE.

  5. Registration decision

The NMBA decides your registration once all requirements are met.

What we do

  • Explain the pathway and prepare documents
  • Review your application before you submit

What we do not do

  • Decide or speed up registration; the NMBA and Ahpra do
  • Guarantee exam results or registration

Frequently asked questions

Is Ahpra registration the same as a visa?

No. Registration lets you practise as a nurse. A visa lets you live and work in Australia. You usually need both, and they are separate applications.

Do I need to sit the NCLEX-RN and OSCE?

Only if the Self-check and assessment place you in the stream that requires the outcomes-based assessment. The Self-check is the first step to find out.

What English score do I need?

The NMBA publishes the accepted tests and minimum scores in its English language skills standard. These are updated from time to time, so we check the current version with you.

Please note

Registration in Australia is decided by the Nursing and Midwifery Board of Australia with Ahpra. Requirements change; always confirm current requirements on the official websites. 4 IN LIFE cannot guarantee any outcome.
