New Zealand OSCE training and guidance for nurses

Preparation for the clinical exam internationally qualified nurses take on the way to registration in New Zealand, through our partner training provider, with clear guidance on every step around it.

The Nursing Council of New Zealand (NCNZ) assesses internationally qualified nurses through a competence assessment. Under the current process it has two parts: an online theory examination, and then a clinical assessment in New Zealand that includes a short orientation and preparation course and an Objective Structured Clinical Examination (OSCE).

Our OSCE training is preparation for that clinical exam. It is delivered through a partner training provider, and it is separate from the official NCNZ course and assessment. Training helps you practise the stations, the communication and the New Zealand context, but the OSCE itself is run and marked by the Council's accredited provider.

Frequently asked questions

Is your training the official OSCE?

No. Our training, through a partner provider, prepares you for the OSCE. The official orientation course and OSCE are delivered through the Council's accredited provider in New Zealand.

Where is the OSCE held?

The clinical assessment is taken in person in New Zealand. Check the current location and booking details in the Council's handbook, as these can change.

Does passing the OSCE mean I am registered?

Passing the competence assessment is one requirement. Registration is decided by NCNZ once all its requirements are met.

Can I work in New Zealand straight after?

Working needs registration with NCNZ and the right visa. These are separate steps, and we help you plan both.

Please note

OSCE training is preparation only and is delivered through a partner training provider. The competence assessment and registration are administered by the Nursing Council of New Zealand. 4 IN LIFE cannot guarantee exam results, registration or employment.
