Understanding the ANMAC skills assessment process

The Australian Nursing and Midwifery Accreditation Council (ANMAC) is the assessing authority for nurses and midwives applying for certain skilled migration visas. Its skills assessment checks your qualifications, and depending on the pathway your experience and English, against Australian standards for migration.
Three different things
- Registration (NMBA and Ahpra): permission to practise as a nurse in Australia.
- Skills assessment (ANMAC): an assessment used in some skilled visa applications.
- Visa (Department of Home Affairs): permission to live and work in Australia.
Assessment types
ANMAC offers more than one type of assessment. Which applies to you depends on factors such as whether you already hold registration in Australia or New Zealand, and where else you are registered. ANMAC has widened access to some assessment types in recent years, so check its current criteria rather than older advice.
Preparing a strong application
- Use clear, complete, high-quality colour scans of every document.
- Make sure your names and dates match across all documents.
- Ask employers for references that describe your role and dates accurately.
- Arrange registration verifications to be sent the way ANMAC asks.
After the outcome
A positive outcome has a validity period. It is one input into the visa process, alongside points, English and other criteria. For advice on the visa itself, speak to a registered migration agent.
Confirm current assessment types, fees and validity on the ANMAC website before applying.
