Study abroad
Documents commonly needed for a study visa application

Every country has its own checklist, and you should always work from the official one for your destination. That said, most study visa applications ask for the same core documents. Understanding why each one is needed helps you prepare a file that makes sense.
Identity and travel
- A passport valid for the period your destination requires
- Passport-size photographs to the specification the country sets
- Previous passports, if you have them
Proof of admission
This is the letter or electronic confirmation from your institution: an offer letter, Confirmation of Enrolment, CAS or letter of acceptance, depending on the country. It shows you have a confirmed place on a specific course.
Academic history
Mark sheets and certificates for Class 10, Class 12 and any degree, plus explanations for gaps in study. Gaps are not automatically a problem, but they should be explained honestly.
English or other language results
The test report your institution and visa require, such as IELTS, TOEFL or PTE. Check that the test and the score are accepted for both the course and the visa.
Financial evidence
This is where many applications run into trouble. You may need to show tuition paid or available, living costs for a set period, and travel costs. Common documents are bank statements, an education loan sanction letter, and income proof for sponsors. The money should be clearly explained: where it came from and who it belongs to.
Statement of purpose or genuine student information
Some countries ask you to explain why you chose this course, this institution and this country, and how it fits your plans. Write it yourself, honestly, in your own words.
Health and character
Medical examinations, health insurance and police clearance certificates may be required depending on the country and the length of your course.
Common mistakes
- Names spelled differently across documents
- Large deposits into a bank account just before applying, with no explanation
- Using a generic statement of purpose copied from the internet
- Missing translations for documents not in English
